TravelClub and its partners support the Repsol Foundation and Sylvestris Group's Green Engine reforestation project, helping to generate a transformative effect on nature and society in the Las Hurdes region.s

TravelClub and the Repsol Foundation unite to promote the Green Engine project. Since May, TravelClub customers can redeem their points and support this initiative, by contributing to the reforestation of a forest in Las Hurdes (Extremadura).

This area was scorched in 2012, where native tree species are being planted that will help recover biodiversity and absorb CO₂ as they grow. Thanks to the project, employment is also being generated in small neighboring towns, giving hundreds of people the chance to keep on giving life to these areas.

Since the beginning of the collaboration, over 3,600 trees have been planted, which will absorb more than 880-kg of CO₂ over the next 50 years.

Green Engine

The Repsol Foundation, along with its subsidiary Sylvestris Group, launched Green Engine in 2021, with the aim of promoting reforestation as a tool for offsetting the carbon footprint within the framework of the ongoing energy transition. An initiative that plans to reforest 70,000 hectares of land in the coming years, capturing more than 16 million tons of CO₂.

Green Engine is a triple-impact project: economic, social, and environmental. In addition to its clear environmental benefits, it has a transformative effect on society and the economy. Thanks to this project, local and inclusive employment is being generated in rural areas in the reforested areas, with special attention paid to the hiring of vulnerable groups. Similarly, the project galvanizes economies through specialized training and the creation of new businesses related to the forestry industry, while attracting further economic activity to generate increased wealth in the general area.

It is a project based on public-private collaboration, which is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, the 2030 Agenda, and the European Green Deal. Green Engine has already reforested over 4,000 hectares across different areas of the Iberian Peninsula, generating more than 1,800 local and inclusive employment opportunities.

Green Engine also has Hispasat as a tech partner on the project to promote technological innovation applied to the protecting forests. Together they have developed a system to prevent forest fires, through a comprehensive system with cameras and sensors that monitor different environmental parameters connected via satellite to detect fires early.

In 2022, the Repsol Foundation launched the Green Engine Marketplace to make it easier for companies and individuals to contribute to these forests.
