Here at the Repsol Foundation, we're joining in celebrating World Tree Day
Within the framework of World Tree Day, Repsol Foundation is promoting Green Engine, a large-scale reforestation initiative in Spain and Portugal to offset CO2 emissions and generate a transformative effect on the environment, society, and the economy.
Trees and forests are a natural solution to reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to the global objective of reducing emissions.
Green Engine is Repsol Foundation and Sylvestris Group project with the aim of 70,000 hectares to be forested on the Iberian Peninsula to offset 16 million tons of CO₂ emissions and create thousands of local and inclusive jobs.
- Since 2022, reforestation efforts have been carried out on more than 4,400 hectares across areas of Asturias, Extremadura, Castilla y León, Galicia, Madrid, and Portugal, which will absorb 1.9 million tons of CO2.
In addition, thanks to this reforestation work, over 1,500 local and inclusive employment opportunities have been generated in the reforested areas.
Technological innovation to protect our forests
Green Engine collaborates with Hispasat as its tech partner of the project; together they have developed a system for forest protection and fire prevention using satellite technology.
Through a network of sensors and panoramic cameras located on the forest's parameter and with satellite connectivity, different environment parameters such as humidity, temperature or wind direction are collected, which allows for early detection of fires and for emergency personnel to be notified.
You can also join World Tree Day with Green Engine marketplace
This year, you can also join World Tree Day by supporting the reforestation in Spain, thanks to the Green Engine marketplace, an innovative digital tool launched by the Repsol Foundation.
Taking part is very simple, just access the Green Engine marketplace website, choose your forest, and make your contribution.
With one single tree you will be helping to absorb on average between 200-300 kg of CO₂ from the atmosphere, which is equivalent to the CO₂ emissions of 150 1-hour meetings. With this action, you will not only be offsetting your carbon footprint, but you will also contribute to recovering biodiversity and social development in the rural environment.
